Tuesday May 31 Mural Dedication

We experimented with flashlights and mirrors to show that light travels in straight lines.
Those students that were finished proudly display their Provincial Projects.

June Calendar
Food for Fun Pizza lunch for June 10 Orders in by June 7 please
We need drivers for our field trip on June 15th We are leaving at 9 and returning for noon.

This morning began early at school as we prepared for the dedication of the mural and thanked the many parents for their support and help in the school.

After the dedication we went to Library and Computers... those students who were finished their Provincial Projects worked on power point then had free time as a bonus for finishing their projects. Those students who were not finished had extra time to work on their projects on the tables in the library.

After Recess we had a special Art presentation from the Victoria Art Gallery. They presented Art under the theme of Music. There were a large number of art pieces with music somehow in the theme. There were a large variety of pictures of various mediums and styles. One of the favorite was a painting of a zucchini on piano keys. The students then worked to create their own art inspired art.

After lunch we read for 35 min then in Science the students did experiments to show that light traveled in straight lines until it was reflected, refracted or absorbed. The main concept is that light travels in straight lines, creates shadows and can be reflected. We ended the day with a rousing game of Slimers island with Ms. Buridge's grade 4/5 class. Great day everyone.

Monday May 30, A normal day

The class is a wonder and in demand for school performances in and out of the school. Many are in the choir and will be performing tomorrow morning for the unveiling of the mural.

Notices:
Tomorrow is the unveiling of mural and coffee and treats for parents starting at 8:15

Due today the provincial report. A picture of all those students finished this project will appear in a photo tomorrow holding their projects high for all to see.

This week started normally with our weekly spelling words. This weeks words are all on a space theme. The tricky part is remembering not only how to spell the words but which ones are proper nouns and need capitals.
Unit 32 Space theme: astronomy comet constellation Earth galaxy Jupiter Mars meteor Mercury meteorite Neptune planet Pluto quasar rocket Saturn Uranus Venus (Bonus: telescope shuttle)

After the spelling test we worked on adding fractions with unlike denominators. Although many students were catching on to this topic many still need more practice. (the concept being you cannot add fractions until you make the denominators the same)

After recess we began by exploring how light bends when it travels through different substances in a process called refraction. In this case we looked how light bends in water by examining a pencil in a clear glass. After working on a one page report on refraction in Science we worked on finishing the story and Cartoon from last week.

After lunch those students not in choir listened to the Goo Goo dolls and did a one page report on them. This was followed by a 40 min reading period and the day ended in music with Mrs. Awalt.

Today the students had lots of unique experiences and opportunities out of the classroom. Today was like having a field trip without leaving the school. The day began with an elementary band from Dewdney Elementary (K to 7) singing and performing for an hour assisted by our own Mr. Duyndam. ,

After recess until lunch we had a second opportunity to work with clay to make another art project with Renee the same lady that helped us make the tiles. She will be back to do glazing around June 10 th.

We started the afternoon with buddies followed by P.E. and we ended the day with our regular Friday test (we did not have time to finish marking the test before the end of the day).

All in all we had an active day with 90 % of the time doing extra curricular things out of the classroom.

Thursday May 26th Track Day

Students compete and cheer on the team at the track meet today.

Notices:
Next tuesday plan to be at the school by 8:30 for parent appreciation and the Mural unveiling.

We began the day working on our writing project for half an hour before the track students were called to the gym for uniforms and to get ready to catch the bus. All but 8 of the students in our class went to the track meet.

After our track students left the non-track students from Ms. Borrage's grade 4/5 class joined us. The students were paired up with students in our class and given the choice of 8 different topics to do a group report together. For the students in both classes it was a great opportunity to work with and get used to other students in the school who they may have to share a class with in grade 5. The day went very well as we worked on group reports, played Slimers Island in the gym with Mrs. Favell's grade 3 class, watched part of the 'Sword and the Stone," played Simon Says and read for a bit until the rest of the class arrived at the end of the day.

Fridays test is the spelling words, adding fractions with like denominators, reducing fractions to simplest form and division.

We started the day with a writing and drawing assignment for Fathers Day. This was followed by math. We were adding fractions with like denominators. The students will need extra practice with this tomorrow as many just began to get the concept.

After recess the students had music with Mrs. Awalt where they began to practice for some small in school performances next week, the unveiling of the mural and for the grade 5 year end ceremony. After music the students had some handwriting practice and when finished, worked on their Socials Provincial project. (Due Monday May 30)

After lunch we read for 30 minutes, had rainbow jello treat from C to celebrate her birthday and worked on finishing the handwriting, the Fathers day stuff and the provincial project. We ended the day with a school recognition assembly in which both the Sr. and Jr. choirs performed together and I recognized 5 of our students for Art, Imagination, Creative writing and Math. All in all a hard working day with lots accomplished.

Lunch Program forms for June

A school supplies form from the PAC for supplies next year. (this is a good deal) It is never too early to get those students ready for next year. Even though there are less than 30 school days until summer, buying early you can pretend the summer is almost over. ha ha.

I hope everyone had a great long weekend. I did not do much around the house but went camping instead so it was a great couple of days. We began this short week with Library and computers. In computers the students finished off their Power Point presentations on explorers. We will have a showing to our buddies and other interested students and parents next week.

After recess we had the final wrap up of a special Metis presentation where we got to sew (weave) a four colour wrist band in the traditional Metis colours, methods materials. We listened to Red River Jigging music as we worked.

We started the afternoon with 30 min of reading followed by the dictation of the weekly spelling words. We then ended the day in the gym with Mrs. Borrage's class.

Friday's test tomorrow

Today all the grade 4 and 5 students from our school went to the Public Works Yard for a field trip. We saw concrete, carpentry, street engineering, roads operations, fabrication, street cleaning, solid waste systems, the mechanic shop, waterworks, electronics and automation, traffic signals, building services, the sign and paint shop and all the rest of the city support services. Our class was treated to a hot dog, fruit, chocolate milk and cookie and one lucky student and parent go to go up in the cherry picker. We left at 930 after reading and returned at 1:00 read for 30 minutes, worked on a design for next year's Public Works tee-shirt designs based on what we saw and heard today. Students were then given time to work on their Provincial reports. We ended the day with a game of Simon Says.

Friday Test: The spelling words and division.

Class Spring Fair Basket

Our class basket theme for the Spring Fair is "The Love of Reading and Chocolate" So far we have about 17 books for all ages, two gift cards, some chocolates and 12 packages of m&m's. The books include Jean Auel's latest book in the clan of the cave bear series, the latest R.A. Salvatore book and a Chess book written by Mr. Wilson. There is still time to get more items into our class basket. Perhaps some more cook books!

Tuesday may 17 update

J shows his contraption and the students enjoy a Metis presentation

Notices:
Field trip tomorrow. Students will be provided a hot dog, a drink and some small chips. If this is not enough please send along some extra. All those parents who indicated they could attend are welcome to attend.

We began our day in the computer lab as we had to exchange our time to make up for taking over the library after recess for a special Metis Presentation. The students used the time for research into their Provincial project. After computers we had a library book exchange, then we went outside to watch as J showed us a catapult designed by Leonardo Davinci that he and his grandfather built from a kit. After flinging a few rocks around we returned to class.

After Recess we went to the library and listened to a lady from the Metis Nation talk about her people and showed us typical artifacts used by the Metis. The students had the opportunity to handle the artifacts and a few volunteered to try on some the traditional clothing. There is a second part to this presentation next week where we will be making wrist bands in the style used by the Metis.

We returned to the class and continued to work on our Provincial projects. I think they will be due the end of next week on Friday the 27th or possibly extended until Monday the 30th.

After lunch we had 35 minutes of reading followed by P.E. where we played a rousing game of Bench ball with Ms B's grade 4/5's. At 2:05 we stopped to help set up tables and chairs and to decorate the gym with our paintings from yesterday's artReach program for the Kindergarten orientation happening tomorrow.

The last 30 min of the day we dedicated to doing Division questions challenging groups against other groups. The new tricky twist was doing questions like 216 / 2 where they had to figure out what to do with the 1 in the tens position. The trick is to put a 0 above the 1 then treat the 1 and the 6 as 16. Many were able to sort this problem out by themselves.

Provincial Project outline

Click on the picture to see the handout list of the things the students were given to include on their provincial research project. The students need to include a picture and at least two good sentences of information with each page. The Pages are a regular 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper folded like a book. I will take tally of their progress and finished work tomorrow. Based on the tally I will assign a final due date based on how much time I think they will need between school and home to finish the project. The students have indicated about a 90% satisfaction and enjoyment of this type of project.

Keep 'Love of Reading" and chocolate items coming in for our class basket for the spring fair.

I got back to school to a pile of get well cards made by the students and a warm welcome. The great cards are now filling our blank bulletin board in the hall which used to be full of our mothers day pictures. It is so nice to be back to work enjoying your children for the 30 days of school left before summer break before they are all yours to enjoy.

As usual we began the week with the spelling pre-test.

This weeks Spelling words

The students then wrote a description of the word then either A) drew a picture of it or B) used the word in a sentence.

After recess we had the opportunity to do a painting workshop through artsREACH a program created to ensure that all children have access to high quality visual and performing arts training.

After lunch those students not in choir listened to the music by Cree songwriter, performer, artist and Visionary Ed Peekeekoot. Ed performed at the school two years ago. We featured the CD "In the Key of Cree." The students completed a one page report on Ed.

After Choir and music appreciation we continued to work on division in math and had time to work on the provincial project. After math the students had Music with Mrs. Awalt.

Thursday May 12th Update from Ms Smith

H & H work on their provincial reports

---- Sorry the blog site was down from Thursday evening until now so you did not get your Thursday update until now. Mr. W---

We had a busy day today with class photos and a recognition assembly in the afternoon. We are continuing to work through the fractions unit, focusing today on changing mixed numbers into improper fractions. The class also worked though a two-minute division speed test.
For group work today, students were put into groups based on the province they each chose for their social studies project. Each group had a chance to explore some books on their province. Working in groups also gave the students an opportunity to bounce ideas off each other and share interesting facts they have discovered. The class has really been enjoying learning more about the Canadian provinces and are eager to share what they are learning.
Reminders:
Friday test tomorrow!
All students in rugby need to come prepared with shorts, runners, a jacket, mouth guard, a lunch, a water bottle, and weather permitting a hat and sunscreen. You will be leaving for the tournament at 10:20am.

Wednesday May 11th Update by Ms Smith

One of the mothers day portraits. Fine art, even if it isn't an exact likeness it does capture the inner essence.

We began our Wednesday by jumping right back into fractions. We reviewed improper fractions vs. mixed numbers. The class was quick to recall the work we did yesterday and some began to move ahead on their own. Today we looked at changing improper fractions into mixed numbers. A tricky concept at first, however by recess the class was able to successfully change improper fractions into mixed numbers without using pictures.
After recess, the class had a fun morning with music and then another session with the “Rocks and Rings” program.
After silent reading we looked at the music artist Michael Buble. Because choir practice was canceled, the whole classed listened to four songs sung by the jazz singer. The students then used a fact sheet to write a one-page report on Michael Buble.
We finished off the day by continuing to work on our Canadian province booklets. The students are using these work blocks to research the province they chose, and put what they learn into their booklets.
Track and Field continues in full swing this week. Div four had a prize winner today...great job H!

Tuesday may 10 update from Ms Smith

During track run off two students ran right out of their shoes but neither stopped to get them. Hilarious

Today we dove right into a new social studies project on the Canadian provinces. After book exchange in the library, the students each chose a Canadian province which they would be interested in learning more about. During computers, we began our research of the provinces by focusing on specific topics such as historical facts, the provincial crests, flags, animals, etc., and many other interesting details!
After recess, we practiced handwriting O Canada before diving right back into our projects. The class spent the rest of the morning starting to put together their Canadian province booklets. The students have been given the challenge of filling 20 pages with information and pictures to show what they have learned about their province.
After silent reading, we began to look at describing fractions using mixed numbers and improper fractions. The students had fun coming up with different foods that we could use as examples. By the end of the lesson, the class was beginning to be able to describe fraction pictures using both mixed numbers and improper fractions.
Because the gym is being used for the “Rocks and Rings” program we finished the day with some outside exercising and free time on the playground.

All is well

This is where I was last year on this day.

Things went well enough at the hospital... today in lots of pain and miss the sympathy the students give.. i have told too many people in my family to toughen up to get too much sympathy at home... ha ha I will drop by briefly tomorrow to be in the class photo... see you all next week mr w

Monday, May 9, 2011

Mr W. off for the rest of the week.

Mr. W rolling a curling stone. Hope the procedure with the other stones goes as well. ha ha

I am heading into the hospital for a Kidney stone procedure and will be off for the rest of the week. I have a very good replacement for the rest of the week in Ms Smith. The students will be working on a Social project on a Canadian Province and starting a new mini-book. In math they will continue on Division and Fractions both of which Ms. Smith is an expert.

Reading 4 the Top: Spelling: Chess

Our school hosted the school board of trustees and other dignitaries to see the release of the Read for the Top Video. A team of trustees challenged the school winning team to a friendly match. As well we had the Island Spelling champion for Victoria, and the Island, who placed 5 th in the Canadian spelling competition. If that was not enough we also had a student from Campus View who just returned from winning the World chess championship for children under 10 years of age. It was an exciting evening and gave us a chance to showcase the school, the district and our community. It is wonderful to teach students and witness such potential and skills in our children even at such an early age.

Monday May 9

Half of the class swept while the other half curled in the Curling presentation "Rocks and Rings"

As well if you fill a small jar with something for prizes.

Last week we finished the 30 spelling word lists in the Spelling Book. So this week I took the list of grade 4 words and printed out one sections. The students then drew a picture of their mom reading their mothers day project and wrote about mothers day at their house.

After recess we did math fractions. We went through about 10 questions slow and one step at a time. The questions were like: what is 2/3 of 12 and 3/5 of 20. By the end most students were coming up with the answer but need more practice. Try these with your child to see if they understand the concept. 2/3 of 15 or 3/9 of 18. We solved these questions by doing them in two steps. a) divided the number by the number of items in the group ( the denominator) to find out how many were in 1 group then B) multiplied the number found in one group by the number of groups (the numerator) Example: 2/3 of 12 A) 12 divided by 3 tells us that there are 4 items in one group then B) there are two groups so 2 x 4 because we are looking for two groups. so 2/3 of 12 = 8

At 11:00 we had a special P.E. presentation called 'Rocks and Rings' introducing us to the basics of curling.

After lunch those students not in choir listened to Fleetwood Mac and did a one page report on them. This was followed by a 40 min reading period and the day ended with music.

Mothers day projects

Some of the students with their Mothers day reports

We hope that you all have a happy mothers day. The students were pretty funny as they tried to think about what their mothers liked, didn't like, would like to do as a job, was like in grade 4, on a holiday as well as what she looked like in a variety of drawing projects and other writing projects. Enjoy all the Mothers day stuff now as when they get to middle school they don't do much if anything for it. I know, as my daughter in grade 8 mentioned to me on Saturday evening that they didn't do anything at school for mothers day. Man we depend on the schools to take our backs and have something meaningful and cool to give moms. Oh well, it is surprising just how many cool things can you get for your mom at the 711 at 930 at night.

Friday Update May 6

Non-rugby students working hard on their project.

Friday began as all Friday with our weekly test. The test was marked but not handed back as I did not get time to record the marks as many in the class were leaving for a rugby tournament after recess. After the test we worked on our mothers day project until recess.

On the test: Looking at a picture
58% of the students recognised Jack Layton correctly
46% of the students recognised Michael Ignatieff correctly
46% of the students recognised Stephen Harper correctly
38% of the students recognised John F. Kennedy correctly

After recess, those students remaining marked the tests. I used marking the test to review the math concepts. After that we worked more on our Mothers day projects.

After lunch we had a buddy activity where we helped our buddy class finish their Mothers day projects. As well Mrs. Dagg liked one of the things we did so had the grade 4's help their little buddies write something similar for their mom. After Buddies Mrs. Whithers took the class to the library to work on a cartooning program while I had a meeting with the principal and the head of technology support for the district about how to facilitate blogs for all the teachers in the school. After computers there was only 20 min until the end of the Day so we cleaned the class and put the final touches on the Mothers day project.

Happy mothers day. We did not have as much time to work on these projects as I would have liked as we usually have more time in May to work on them. But your gift represents your child on many levels and I think you already have some idea of who they are as people already.

Thursday Update May 5

Lunch can be nutritious and creative. H has her sandwich cut into the shape of a star and a bone. Art you can eat... nice.
Notices:
Wed Express (the school newsletter) for those of you who do not get it emailed to you

In order to help the students understand the process of putting a fraction into simplest form we did two things. Looked at division as the inverse of basic multiplication 15 divided by 3 = 5 because 5 x 3= 15 and reviewed the concept of multiples. (The multiples of 10 are those numbers that divide evenly into 10. [1, 2, 5 and 10] the multiples of 12 are [1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12]) From there we will explore common multiples (1 and 2 are common multiples of 10 and 12) . It may also help to review prime numbers for those students who understand their basic multiplication and are good at math. Prime numbers are those numbers that can only be divided evenly by themselves and 1. [3, 5, 7, 11, 13]. Recognizing prime numbers will help them understand if a number is in simplest form.

Math was followed by a writing assignment for our M.E. writing project. Which is taking longer than I had planned. However, anything that is of quality always does so after Recess We continued with our writing program.

In the afternoon we started with reading for 35 minutes then worked on various Mothers day art projects.

Friday test is Spelling unit 30, putting fractions into simplest form and answering questions about the National Election matching the names of the political leaders to their Pictures (see above), their parties and list in order who was first second and third.
1) Stephen Harper - Conservative,
2) Jack Layton - NDP,
3) Michael Ignatieff - Liberal

New add to Blog .... Photos

Many of the parents and students have indicated, in the "What do you like best" section and by word of mouth, that the thing they like best about the blog is the photos. As such I have created a Flickr page with the class photo's. Flickr only allows me to show up to 200 pictures for free. When I add more than that I think it drops the first ones added. So check it out. I have arranged the pictures into sets for ease of search. Click on the right under the heading of New Feature and "Click Here to see recent Photo's " to Enjoy photo's of your children.... p.s. it does navigate you away from the blog. In Flickr I have left the settings so you can download any of the photo's you want.

The Election Results are in....

'C' and 'I' tied for first place in the class election

The votes are in and counted and we have a tie. The election was far closer than even I would have predicted showing the popularity of all the political parties and their leaders. There were only 4 votes separating the fourth place party from the winning party. The votes were 12 for F, 13 for H, 16 for I and 16 for C. 'C' and 'I' have to decide if they are going to form a coalition government between the two winning parties or go for a vote off between the top three parties. Tomorrow I will release the final decision and the government. This was way more exciting then the election on Monday, but not as exciting as the last Canucks game. Well actually it was as exciting as the Canucks game and has also gone into overtime...

Happy Birthday K

Happy Birthday K and thanks for the Doughnuts .

Div 4 Votes

Today was election day in Div 4. The students lined up one at a time and collected their ballots from the polling officers then went behind our voting screen and voted for two of the four parties. Each student was given 4 slips of paper with the names of the leader of each of the parties on them. The students had to dropped 2 ballots into the ballot box and placed the other two ballots into the discard ballot box.

Wednesday May 4

Victoria Story Theater actors presented a play on the importance of helping others

Notices:
The Saanich Emergency Kit comes home today
(go over the contents with your child to be emergency ready)

Wednesday began with a double period of our M.E. Writing project and finishing up our art project from yesterday.

Right after recess we had a fire drill. The students in the school had their best fire drill of the year both in terms of how quickly and quietly they were able to leave the building. Perhaps it has something to do with the Saanich emergency training we had yesterday. After the fire drill the students went to music with Mrs. Awalt.

After Music we took a break from division and worked on our fraction unit. Today we focused on making fractions into simplest form. 4/12 = 1/3 or 3/15 = 1/5 etc. Many students did not get the concept. It will take a few days of practice to understand why we put fractions into lowest form and understand how to approach the problem. Part of the problem for some students is that they are not good at basic times table facts.

We started the afternoon finishing our class vote then at 1:00 pm we went to the Gym for a special Drama presentation by the Victoria based Story theater on giving and volunteering our time and resources to help others.

After the presentation we had 30 min and worked on an art project.

Tuesday Update May 3

The class had a special presentation on emergency preparedness in the afternoon

Lunch program forms back signed please (for those on or who want to be on the lunch program)
Food for Fun Pizza day forms (due Monday 9th; Food for Fun May 13)
Food for fun information sheet

We began the day with Library and Computers. The students worked on making two posters using the web site wordle.net. When these posters were printed the students worked on finishing their previous power point presentations on an explorer and an animal.

After recess the four political parties helped their leaders put the final touches on their speeches while the rest of the students colored their printed posters from computers.

For science we did a fun activity, as part of our unit on light, with a mirror activity. The students had to use a mirror to solve mirror image questions on a hand out sheet. The sheet was finished by all students and put into their science dou-tang.

After Lunch we had a special presentation in the gym on Emergency Preparedness from Saanich and a safety talk about natural gas from A's dad representing Terasen Gas. The presentation was informative, interesting and fun with games and interactive components. Perfect for grade 4. The students were shown what to put into an emergency kit, how to duck and cover in emergencies and how to respond to many natural disasters. We were given some very generous hand outs and materials to bring home. We did not have enough time at the end of the day to send them home as the class did not get cleaned up fast enough after our art project. I probably should have started clean up earlier but they were into the project and did not want to cut it too short. I was, however, informed by several students, that if there is an earthquake tonight and need their safety kits they are going to be very mad at me.

Following the presentation we listened to speeches from the 4 political parties and ate cupcakes donated to the class by one of the political leaders. This was followed with an art project using pastel chalk.

Tomorrow we hold the class elections to decide who will form the class government and be a pain in my side for the rest of the week. Thanks Mrs. B.

x-country team victory

Six members of our class competed in the zone x-country race after school. All of the students ran their personal best. C's mom told the team that anyone that ran better than 15th in the zone meet would get a McFlurry. S and H came in 14th and 13th and at the end of the day C's mom showed up as promised with the treat for the two boys. We run for pleasure, joy, fitness, teamwork and school spirit... but sometimes we run faster for treats... Thanks Mrs. B. your the greatest.

Monday Update May 2 Voting Day

The class had a quick consensus vote to bring in four political party leaders. Each of them picked three other students to join them in making their campaign.

We began the day and the week with our spelling pre-test:

Unit 30:

multiply imagination favorite computer citizenship invisible undercover enjoyment discussion America unusual example melody temperature understanding experiment explanation oxygen (Bonus: national and Olympics ).

The students (The spelling words are also in the right column to make them easy to find throughout the week) Along with the spelling pre-test the students were given the 4 unit 30 spelling sheets. After spelling the students worked on their M day Writing assignment.

Between recess and lunch we watched a video on elections in Canada, then the students created four political parties by selecting four possible class Prime Ministers. The four possible leaders selected two or three other students to work with them to come up with a platform on the following issues: What to do between recess and lunch for group time/ class money/ unemployment (many students want regular jobs in the class) / Plan P.E. for Friday / health care (we only have plain band-aids some are calling for Sponge Bob band-aids) / Seating plan for the class for the rest of the week / Environment (how to keep the class clean and green) / homework /

While the Four political parties prepared their speech on the issues the rest of the class worked on a one page report on who is eligible to vote in Canada and answered the question "Is it important to Vote; Why or Why not.

After lunch the students not in choir listened to and did a one page report on The Man in Black, Johnny Cash. After Choir we listened to the promises of our class four political parties on the class issues then the students went to music with Mrs. Awalt.
