Time, Picasso, Chopin and an Assembly

Working on their Paper-Mache

We began the day watching video's on telling time. Time is the Math unit we are going to be working on for the next few weeks.   It is amazing how many bad video's there are for trying to teach the students about telling analog time.  I think we will have to make our own video on the subject and put it up on Youtube.  I have given each student a mini book sized handout and the students had to make a small cover to go with their mini math booklet.   Most of the class (all but 5) do not know how to tell time using an analog clock.  Because of this, our introduction took far longer than I had anticipated, the students could not help each other.  But no worry time spent learning how to tell time is not wasted.

After recess, as part of our Famous Person study the students had to do a one page report on Picasso.  To begin I had them draw Picasso the way he would have drawn someone during his cubist period.  The results were quite amazing, and again time consuming.  Most of the students seemed to still be on long weekend time.  I guess great art takes more time as well.  During this time students who were ahead of the others had time to work on their paper-mache.

The afternoon began with choir.  Those students not in choir listened to and did a report on Chopin who at the age of seven began performing and writing music.  Chopin was one the greatest composers and musicians of his time.  He was so great he was even compared to the amazing Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Our students in Choir

After choir the students began a one page report on the reasons Columbus wanted to find a sea path to the Orient.  Basically the land route was long, dangerous and full of taxes and thieves waiting to take the silk, spices and anything else being transported from India and China to Europe.

At 200 we had our first recognition assembly.  The odd divisions 1,3, 5 etc. each chose a few students to honor for their hard work or service to the school. Next month will be the even divisions which will include us.   At the assembly we learned the meaning of the acronym R.O.C.K.S, used by the school all the time  stands for Respect, Organization, Co-operation, Kindness and Safety.  Note: This will be on the Friday test.

Have a good evening, get lots of rest and come prepared to work and learn tomorrow. Mr. W
