Greatest Halloween Costumes, How Canada got it's Name and Mammoth Hunters

Notice:
Student Pictures Tomorrow

Men and Women had different roles in Prehistoric North Americans

We began the day with M.E. The students had to write about the greatest Halloween Costume they ever had.  It is timely as a topic and the students were super excited about the topic.  I told them I wanted them to think of an interesting way to introduce their favorite Halloween costume of all time.  We talked about when they were young how they thought it (Halloween was real) Many of the students did such a great job.  There are many but here are two examples of great work by our class.

The Vampire
One dark and stormey night a vampire was lurking in the darkness.  She was searching for something, something, sweet something, something delicious. No not blood, Candy..... by E

Darth Vader
Once upon a time in a galaxy far far away Darth Vader is planning his ultimate attack ever.  It is getting chocolate bars, chips, and other kinds of yummy food and candy.... by J

We have a new Smart board like thing to try in the class

After Recess for Language Arts we took a Socials theme and looked at a few theories about How Canada got it's Name.  The students had to decide which of the theories they liked best and write about it. The first theory is that is was based on a First Nations word.   Kanata which means 'village' or 'dwelling,' or Kanatak which means 'sacred place.'  Another story is that it is from the Spanish words 'Aca nada' that means "here is nothing" because they did not discover gold.

When you get right down to work you never have homework

After lunch those students not in choir listened to and did a one page report on Giuseppe Verd, another child prodigy.

After Choir we talked about how the first first nations people might have come to America.  The two main ways thought about are that some arrived by water craft but most believe the original first nations, being nomadic, followed mammoth and other large animals over a land bridge between Asia and Alaska.

We watched a video on the mammoth and how millions of them used to roam the far north between Asia and America.  The video was about modern ivory hunters (yes people are still hunting mammoth, even though they are extinct) and the large number of mammoth remains they are finding.  We then talked about the different roles of men and women in hunting nomadic peoples and about the great animal migrations and the hunter gather societies that lived off them.  The students then worked on a one page report on how First nations peoples came to N.A.  It was a fun and lively day, see you all tomorrow.
