We began the afternoon with quiet reading.  Almost all of the class are well settled into the idea of reading and manage the 30 to 40 minutes of reading without reminding.

After reading the students went to Music where they learned a song about an old man who had a clock.  When he died  the clock died.  They then  learned a Thanksgiving song about being thankful for work and play then they practiced rhythms and played a game called Amma Lamma Cooma Lamma

After Music we began our next Mini book based on the book 'Fortunately and Unfortunately' by  Remy Charlip.  The story starts with a problem situation then alternates between things that go right (Fortunately) and things that go wrong (Unfortunately) until the story circles back to a good solution to the problem.
For example:
Dan got tickets for a cruise ship
Unfortunately the cruise ship left from another island
Fortunately he was able to catch a small boat
Unfortunately it sank  etc..... until ...

Fortunately he had a parachute
Unfortunately he landed on a cat
Fortunately the cat was on the  cruise ship

To give the students ideas on how to write the new Mini-book we did some improvisation with six student volunteers.  One side gave a Fortunately situation while the other side gave an Unfortunately response.  The goal was to try and stump the person on the other person into pausing, laughing or repeating a response.   Both sides did great and in the end I had to make the students sit down as they appeared they could go all day.    The activity worked well and the students were excited to begin writing their new Mini-books.
