Tuesday Morning: Sip Smart Presentation

Notice: A blue Sip Smart record sheet went home today for homework.

Students are asked to record everything they drank today and how much of each drink. Please return your sheet by Tuesday, February 12.

Sip Smart presentation by Camosun Nursing Students
We had a busy morning with students working on and completing a variety of assignments: the final copy of their modern fairy tale, a picture of their main character in their fairy tale, handwriting practise, warm/cool colours Valentine Art, and a page from the Math Makes Sense textbook on multiplication. Phew - all that before recess!

All year I've slowly raised expectations about work habits, time to complete work, the quality of their work, and content in their assignments. The quality of their fairy tales, the amount of material we have thoroughly covered, and the amount of marking I have to do this week is evidence of that :-) Awesome job everyone. Keep it up.

After recess 4 Nursing students from Camosun College came to our class to do an interactive presentation on Healthy Drink Choices, called Sip Smart. Students were really interested and participated in the hands-on activities. The presenters left us with a Science Experiment. "Teeth" (they are actually dried meat bones) are sitting in glass jars filled with various drinks. They will sit there for 3 weeks until the presenters come back. We are going to watch the "teeth" and pay attention to see which drinks corrode the teeth the fastest: Coke, Diet Coke, Water, OJ, or an Energy Drink.

Here are some things the students learned:
-There are 42 g of sugar in a can of pop (10 teaspoons)
-How large amounts of sugar and caffeine affect kids
-Energy Drinks are dangerous for children to drink (affecting their heart and other organs)
-Water is the only drink that doesn't corrode teeth
-Gaterade and Powerade are only recommended for people who exercise intensely and continuously for 90 minutes or more
-What rotten teeth look like (this picture made the most impact!)

After our presenters left, we had 20 minutes to finish math and other unfinished work. A few students who had finished everything drew, read, or played with their new playdoh.

See you next Tuesday! (Monday is a stat.)
