October 31: Puppets and Mosters

Halloween day...
What more can I say....
(poem by Mr. Wilson)

We began the day with our usual two spelling lists. I dictated one and half way through got a student to dictate the easy list and think of a sentence. It is good practice at speaking in front of the class by a student. After spelling the students worked off a sheet to design their own monster. They had to plan what it would look like in pieces... it's teeth, it's ears, it's eyes, it's tentacles, etc. This activity is a planning step for the next mini book called "My Monster." Which we will start writing tomorrow.

After recess the students worked at making puppets of themselves in their Halloween costume... that is all they are really thinking about so I went with the flow in an art activity.

The activity took them a long time and went into Math. I gave them the opportunity to continue or go with Mrs. Stevenson, Mrs. Colley's sub, to do math or to stay and work on their Halloween costume puppets.

These students opted to do math with Mrs. Stevenson instead of doing art.

After lunch when the choir students went to choir those students not in choir listened to Halloween music (old and new) and did a write up on the history of the song (Monster Mash)

After Choir we had our Halloween social thanks to "J" who brought in cupcakes (it is also her birthday) for the whole class and "E" who brought in goodie bags with treats, small bubbles, monster teeth or skeleton whistles. The students had to all put in $5.00 of their Wilson money to get into the social. We watched Walt Disney Halloween special moments, and the students wanted to watch two Halloween song videos, a) the monster mash b) thriller. After that we cleaned up and quickly went over a few important Halloween safety tips and out they went, excited for the greatest Kid day of the year.

Hope you all get lots of rest and eat healthy... take care Mr. W
