Friday Nov 12 Remembrance day No school

Students working on making sentences from the spelling words.

The spelling this week is a review of the last five words lists. Friday's test will be on any twenty of the words. The students tried to write sentences using three or more of the spelling words in each sentence. After spelling the students filled out a social survey about who their friends are as well as asking about their attitudes toward school subjects and how they feel about themselves and school. The information from the survey will be used to help me plan and organize groups based upon students feedback.

After recess we talked about Remembrance day and I showed pictures of Flanders Field from when my 12 year daughter and I were there two years ago. The students began working on a poster based on the poem Flanders field written by the Canadian Dr. John McCrae in 1915.

Samples of student work who finished first and a typical class white board.. wish we had a smart board.

'Y' recites the poem "In Flanders Field" from memory. Wow.. well done

For math we reviewed addition and subtraction. Mrs. Colley has finished with her math group and will begin a writing group. As the math groups have finished we will begin a unit on number sense and begin multiplication followed by division as the reverse process of multiplication.
After lunch those students not in choir listened to and did a one page report on Bob Dylan. This Remembrance week it is good to listen to music that informed a whole generation on war and peace.

After choir the students had more time to work on their posters while we continued listening to Bob Dylan music. This was followed by Social Studies where we talked about and did a one page report on Tommy prince the most decorated Aboriginal soldier in World War II who won ten medals for bravery. As the students had worked hard all day I ended 15 minutes early to start clean up then played Silent ball for the last 10 minutes.
