Imax Beaver film, Poetry, and Literature Circles

Notices: Please return Friday Sports Day permission forms

Please return Student Led Conference forms

Welcome back after the long weekend!

Fractured (Modern) Nursery Rhyme that was a favourite this morning

This morning students reviewed and practised 2 digit x 2 digit multiplication. The long weekend and perhaps eating a lot of chocolate caused some students to forget what to do. We did a few questions together to review.

In Science, students watched a 2012 National Geographic Imax documentary on Beavers. Last week students made notes on what they thought they knew about Beavers and this week, after watching the documentary, wrote notes on what they learned, organized into these categories: Description, Habitat, Food, Young, and Miscellaneous Interesting Facts.

Writing a 2 speaker poem together

Writing a collaborative poem

Imax documentary on Beavers

We shared answers under Description, I made a master list, and they copied anything they missed before recess time. Showing me their finished page was their ticket out the door to recess. Everyone finished, although some needed 5 min of recess time to complete their work :-)
Next week we'll continue with this class research to model how they will gather information in their own words on an animal of their choice and record their sources for their own research project later in the term.
After recess we continued with the Literature Circles we started last week with Ms. Koch and myself.
She took a group while the remainder worked with me in the classroom on: readings poems with 2 speakers; rhyme scheme (ex. ABABA); reading fractured (modern) versions of traditional nursery rhymes -

Presenting collaborative poem to the class

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB for this poem
id the original source, read together, and identify the rhyme scheme; and writing their own 2 speaker poem with a partner or group of 3. Some groups presented theirs to the class.

Ms. Koch's 2 groups (each for 25 min) played Apples to Apples, a word game that focuses on cooperation, manners, taking turns, respect, and literacy skills.
Lastly, before lunch was Spelling.
Mr. Wilson is teaching the class this afternoon. See you next week!

Mrs. Schneider
