hunting ≠ killing, computer math, reading

Book Orders due tomorrow

We began the day talking about math word problems and how to approach them.  How to think about the whole question. Thinking about what the question is asking.   How to draw the problem out so that it makes sense.  After talking about Math we began M.E.  In M.E. we talked about hunting.  I started with the statement written on the board: hunting ≠ killing.  Hunting is learning about an animal, knowing of it's habits, its scat, fur, patterns of movement and environment  that you can get close to it.  Then knowing how to find, track, stalk the animal to get you close.  Once your close you can take a picture, enjoy the animal or if you have a need kill the animal.  I told stories about the first nations way of war.  It was better to sneak into his tent and take his arrows and leave a sign that you were there.  That shows you could have killed him if you wanted.  You now have his respect, which is better than killing any day.  The students then chose to write a story about hunting, being hunted (the animal's perspective), answer the question; Should we hunt?, or tell how to catch a raccoon.

After recess we went to the computer lab to practice doing math quesions like the ones they will get on the fsa test.  I taught them to use an online calculator as they are allowed to use a calculator on the test.

After computer time we had reading.  Many of the students cheered when I announced it was reading time.  Wow.  What a great class.  Well most of them love reading and hopefully those that don't will soon.

After lunch we had choir.  Those students not in choir listened to and did a one page report on the Allman brothers.  The Allman Brothers Band had a great influence on modern music.  They combined deeply Southern strains of music — blues, country, and gospel — with boisterous rock & roll and their jazzy, jam-oriented style. Thus they created the "New South" sound, drafting a template to be used for decades by everyone from Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Marshall Tucker Band to My Morning Jacket and the Drive-By Truckers.

We ended the day comparing Igloos and Tipis.  We watched movies and read about how to raise a tipi then the students did a Venn diagram to compare the tipi to the igloo.

See you all tomorrow... mr w
