Conscious Being Versus Insentient Nature

Notices went home today for the 'Snow Pass' 2012-13 good at ANY ski hill in B.C.  The pass is for any student in grade 4 or 5.  It includes free lift, free lessons, and free rentals for your child.  Read the pamphlet for more details.  After talking about the 'Snow Pass'  we began the day with a Weather related Calvin and Hobbes....conscious being versus insentient nature... very funny and a good way to wrap up Mrs. Schneider's weather unit.

We started with Math, representing and writing numbers in 4 different ways.

two hundred sixty five
2 hundreds 6 tens 5 ones
200 + 60 + 5
265

We talked about how to read and write large numbers and worked on understanding numbers.  Most of the students got the concept. (this will be  on Friday's test).  After math the students had time to work on their new Mini-book (good news, bad news) based on a hero they create; Mighty dog, Box man, Super Cake etc.

After recess we usually do a famous Canadian.  I had all the information ready on Joe Shuster  for our study.  In our Mini-Book the students had to create their own character, so I thought  it would be great for them to know that a Canadian was one of the two creators of the world's most well known superhero, Superman.  The students pointed out that they have handed in their ME books for me to gather marks for the report cards which go home on the 22 nd.  So instead of doing a report on Joe Shuster the students, looked at a copy of the first Superman comic released in 1938, and made an 'Action Comic' of their own first edition comic  featuring their character.  As the students were working hard we took a break to play seven up.....

After lunch the students who are not in choir listened to and did a report on 'Freddie Mercury' who was known for his flamboyant stage persona and powerful vocals over a four-octave range.  After Choir we began our study of the Inuit.  We began with a look at the seal, the main food source for the Inuit.  In the past I lived in the high arctic  for eight years so I have lots of stories and insight into the Inuit.  I passed around a pair of my kamiks   (ᑲᒥᒃ )  soft boots made of reindeer skin and sealskin.  The video's and student report took us up the the bell time.  See you all tomorrow.  take care Mr. W

We watched part of an old 1940 film called 'Nanook of the North' showing Nanook hunting the Ogjuk (The Big Seal) .  It is amazing check it out www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkGf0_jpoy0
