100-60+9=49

I introduced the students to their new math booklets. In them, students will learn and practice math calculation strategies. Today students were given number 49 and wrote as many equations as they could that equaled 49 within the given time. We brainstormed together first and shared ideas. Some examples were: 10+10+10+10+9 = 49, 100-60+9=49, (25x2)-1=49, etc. It will give students multiple tools on how to approach math questions.
After their spelling pre-test, we talked about and reflected on peacefulness in a double journal entry. Mr. W and I include lessons like these to help students learn respectful and responsible behaviors. Today, students first wrote what they thought peacefulness meant and looked like, then after learning more about it, wrote the second part about what they understand after learning more. It an insightful activity, and the rest of the day was calm. We had a lovely day! What a great way to start our Monday.
After recess, students started a plot outline for Survival , finished a library activity for Mrs. Wilson (the librarian), and started a title page for their Artist of the Month duotangs.

After lunch was Library for a book exchange. This took longer than normal so when we came back to class, students silent read for 25 minutes before packing up their bags and heading to Gym.
I will post pictures later tonight.
