Terry Fox and Michael Mitchell

Notices:
Please send back the emergency Information sheet ASAP as it helps us keep up to date about your child's information.
Today we worked hard at getting a solid start to our Social Studies Unit.  Next week is the Terry Fox run so we talked about and watched videos of Terry Fox and the Marathon of Hope.  The students are learning what I expect in terms of quality of work.  I expect the students, at this time, to complete one page reports which contain a combination of information, illustration and inspiration.  I think that limiting the space available for an assignment to one page makes the students feel less threatened and able to work harder on the creative presentation of the information.  As you can see from the four examples, many of the students in our class are producing excellent work.  Some of the students finished this assignment, others took it home for homework.

As we were worked on Social Studies I had the students also begin to create the title page for their social studies unit on exploring who we are in Canada and our connection to the First Nations Peoples (Aboriginal, Metis and Inuit).

By the time we worked and relaxed and played a few games it was Lunch time.  Today the focus of the students was better and was reflected in the pace at which  most of the students were working.

After Lunch we read for about 30 minutes then were treated to an amazing concert by Michael Mitchell.  Mitchell is  a great Canadian Singer and Song writer known for his rousing "Canada is for Kids" school concerts.  The students listened, laughed and danced the afternoon away.  It was a great pleasure to have Michael Mitchell here especially as he performed the concert for free because we agreed to let him use the concert to make  a promotional video.  Check out His web site at http://www.michael-mitchell.ca/

A list of school days and events  for September is now listed on the right under the heading 'Coming Events'.  Keep up the good work students.  I expect great things from you this year.  Take care Mr. W
