Friday began with our usual Friday test. The test included Spelling, Math word problems, a Venn diagram comparing igloos to tipis, telling 5 things that make fairy tales different and answer a Library question about an author (Robert Munsch)
As the students finished the test they worked to complete two pages in their handwriting booklet set up by Mrs. Schneider.
After recess continued reading the novel Peter Pan. I re-read the first chapter and the students had to re-tell the first chapter. Retelling is a great skill and one that the students need to learn. In this chapter there is a combination of action and the introduction concepts. Some students had a hard time wondering how to include the non action plot elements, like the introduction of Neverland, which is mentioned but is not part of the action.
The students then worked on their mini-book based on the book of real facts about the 'Plight of the Polar bear.' It is great to see how the students are dealing with things like global warming and the melting of the Polar ice.
After lunch we opened the bank for the weekly pay day, had show and share, reading or drawing followed by buddies. In buddies the students worked on math and reading with the little buddies.
We followed this with an extra recess which was earned by the students for reaching, as a school, 5000 nights of reading. It was a great sunny day and we enjoyed the break. L said that it was way more fun that a usual recess. Probably because it was extra and maybe because all the teachers were outside with the students. I know I had fun. The extra recess was followed by a short reflection period. We reflected on all the work we have done and have to do by the end of this term. Some are doing well and have most everything done, others have lots of work to do. Next week a list of work completed and incomplete will come home. We ended the day with a rip roaring game of bench ball in gym.
