Imagine a Night and Math

Shared Reading
This morning students reviewed the letters that we've covered so far in handwriting before practising 2 pages in their workbooks. After that, students completed a mock FSA writing activity to practise several things: write a creative story with a beginning, middle, and end; double space while writing a story; write a story within a set time limit; and experience what one of the writing sections of the FSA is like.
Before students started writing, they also looked at student responses to a previous FSA written response question that the government makes available to the public (availabe online on the gov.bc.ca website). This written section is marked out of 4 and we compared a 4/4 response to 3/4, 2/4, and 1/4 responses. These samples are informative for the FSA but also for standards for grade 4 writing.

I showed the students a picture from Imagine a Night, and then we brainstormed and completed a planning page together before students started writing.
When students finished, they worked on a Science title page for Light and Sound and I read Imagine a Night to them.
When the math group went to see Ms. Smith, the remaining students completed a review of addition and subtraction. Next week we will work on more multiplication, supplementing what Mr. W has done with them.

This afternoon students had Silent Reading, then Shared Reading with a partner if they wanted to, then Music with Mrs. Awalt. I was with our class while Mr. W had the other grade 4 class in the computer lab for FSA practise. Around 2:00 we switched and Mr W taught our class for the remainder of the day.
