We began our Friday with the weekly Test. Many of the things we talk or
write about during the week turn up on the Friday test. The test has
many functions. It encourages students to pay attention and to do their
work. Students will soon realize that the work they do is going to be
tested and, once learned, helps students to become better students. For
example, on Thursday mornings the students have to choose between two
sides of an issue. We discuss it, create charts or diagrams to organize
the idea and the students write out a page report on their choice.
Then we have a discussion or debate on the topic by a few students.
This week the Thursday topic was, "Which are better books or
television." The essay topic on the test is exactly the same "Which are
better Books or Television. They get a second chance to write about
the same topic after they plan an essay around it, have already had an
attempt at answering the question in a one page report which includes a
diagram of the concept and heard some students argue the issue. All in
all they should be prepared for the test. Also on the test were a math
graphing exercise, a pick the greatest number out of three given and
they had to remember two ideas from the math video we watched. The
students also had to give a short answer on the two Socials assignments
we studied this week, 'How First peoples came to North America' and
'How Canada got its Name'. Making connections, reading, writing,
watching videos, doing art and repeating information in different ways
help retention of the ideas for remembering it on tests. For example
the Science Question on the test was to Name and Draw three types of
clouds. At the back of the room there are posters of the students
artwork with the three types of clouds they made using cotton balls and
that they had labeled.

Half way through the test we had to take a
break to go down to the Mall as the whole school turned out at the mall to greet the 'Cops for
Cancer' cyclists on the last leg of their trip down the island to raise
money for cancer. It was a great experience for the school, the choir
members, from last year, sang a song under the guidance of Mrs. Awalt
and Mrs. Carlton, the rest of the students had pom poms or bells or
shaker hammers to cheer and make lots of noise to greet the Cops. Robin
Farrow from 107.3 was the spokesperson and the credit union donated a
check of over $2 000. The Cops came rolling up under a police escort
with sirens blaring which is always great to experience. They
introduced themselves, posed for photo's, gave out personal picture
cards (like hockey cards), shook hands with the students then got back
on their bikes and carried on for the final gathering tonight. We got
back to the school at 10:30 and had a late recess then finished off our
test. When students were finished the test we tore up paper getting for
our paper mache Caravel projects.

Making Thanksgiving crafts |

With our buddies |
After lunch we read for 15 minutes before going to buddies to help them
make Thanksgiving crafts. We followed that up with a quick buddy
computer period and P.E. with Mrs. Carlton's class. What a busy and
memorable yet not too productive, in terms of actual work day. Take
care everyone. Have an amazing Thanksgiving weekend. See you all
Tuesday. Mr. W
