Once a month, I’ll feature a page-turning, really good book on our class blog. Some will be novels, but others will be picture and information books that are interesting to our grade 4 students. All of the books featured are in our classroom and/or in our school’s library.
This month’s recommendation is Holes by Louis Sachar. (We have several of Louis Sachar’s novels in the classroom, along with this suspenseful, funny, and action-packed adventure story.)
Recommended Book for October:
Holes by Louis Sachar
Stanley Yelnats has bad luck. He is accused of stealing a pair of basketball shoes worn by an NBA star but is actually innocent. He is convicted by a judge and sentenced to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention center. Camp Green Lake is in the middle of the desert. The kids who are sentenced to go there have to dig large holes all day, 6 days a week, while avoiding scorpions, rattlesnakes, and yellow-spotted poisonous lizards.
Stanley is an overweight kid who likes to watch TV. The physical labour is torturous but despite the blisters, sweat, and the strict warden’s rules, Stanley becomes friends with some of the other kids and learns to be courageous. Stanley suspects that there is a buried treasure that the warden is looking for. He wants to find out the truth and also to prove his innocence. Join Stanley in his adventures and humourous mishaps at Camp Green Lake to find out if there is a buried treasure, if Stanley can survive, and if Stanley can prove his innocence.
I rate this book 5 stars out of 5.
