Temperatures, Graphing, and Group Work
Students wrote their Spelling Pre-Test this morning. Words are uploaded on the right panel for this week. A few parents have requested that the following week’s words be uploaded on Fridays. I will upload them and whoever reads the blog on the weekend will get a sneak-peak at the Monday Spelling Pre-Test words. It will give busy families a few extra days to help students practice their words.
In Math, students recorded Victoria’s temperatures for the past week in a chart and started a double bar graph where we will compare Victoria’s temperatures to another city’s. After hearing about the climate and animals that live in Sidney, Australia; Nairobi, Kenya; and Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, the class voted for Nakhon Pathom. Its weather is hot and humid, with a dry and wet season instead of our 4. Our bar graph will show similarities and differences in the temperatures in these 2 locations.
I taught at an international school in Nakhon Pathom but didn’t tell the class this until after they voted. I also showed them a promo video from the school’s website and we discussed how the climate there appeared different than ours.
When some students go to see another teacher for language arts after recess, the remaining group also does reading or writing activities. For the next while, the students will be reading short stories and showing what they understand in pictures, by answering written questions, or telling others about what they learned.
I’ve been reading aloud from Gordon Korman’s Shipwreck, the first in the Island trilogy, for 20 min before lunch. Students listen, draw, and/or catch up on unfinished work. A small group goes to another teacher for additional math help at this time too.
After lunch was a book exchange at the library, silent reading, a good start on a group assignment to define what weather is, and Benchball in the gym at the end of the day.
We had a busy day!
A good start to the group assignment. Students will finish tomorrow. |
