I'm still collecting weather pictures if anyone wants to submit any :-)

Notice:
No school Friday as it is a pro-d day for our school
Tomorrow we celebrate 15 min of reading fun in preparation for family literacy day on Sunday. The school has chosen Robert Munsch and his books to read and study tomorrow (and all next Week) Next Thursday is dress like a favorite Munsch character. The students can dress or bring in some item that reminds them of a character or a story by Robert Munsch.
Tuesday afternoon
Mrs Schneider was away ill Tuesday morning. We hope she is feeling better. I know she hates to miss the valuable time she spends with the class and I know the class will miss the productive learning time spent with her.
We began the afternoon reading followed by Music. The students are reading notes and playing the recorder. They were learning a new French song when I took the pictures. The last period I gave over to a catch-up, solid work period. I have handed out a check list of all the work they have been assigned to check off what has been finished so far this term.
Wednesday:
We began the day working on the group project on the Polar Bear. The students worked very hard and were quite focused on completing their mini-polar bear books. Some of them are so funny I laughed out loud. We followed this with reading from Peter Pan chapter 2. The students take notes about important plot events and keep a list of new characters and when they were introduced.
After lunch the students that do not go to choir listened to and did a report on Crosby, Stillls, Nash and Young, one of the most successful acts of the late 60's and 70's. They were the only American-based band to approach the overall societal impact of the Beatles.
After choir we talked about the travois a sort of "moving van" used by small and large groups to move and pack all their belongings. Writing information from a personal first person perspective, in this case a journal, is a way to avoid plagiarizing information. At 2:00 we went to the awards ceremony in the gym (even numbered divisions being honored) We ended the day by putting away the chairs and cleaning up the gym and playing a quick game of bench ball with the last 10 minutes.
Great work everyone. See you tomorrow. Plan to have your spelling test tomorrow.

Monday
Reminder: Please remember to read at home each night and ask a parent/guardian to sign the Nights of Home Reading sheet.
Science Station 1: Find 2 shakers that make the same sound |
New lunch program forms also went home yesterday.
This posting is late because I've been under the weather with a cold/flu. I taught the class yesterday (Monday) and Ms. Abra, a TOC, taught the class this morning because I was unable to come in. She emailed me to say that the morning went really well. I'm happy to hear that and you all should feel good about having a respectful, calm morning :-)Science Station 2: List sounds found in nature and people-made sounds |
In the morning students had Spelling; Science stations about Sound that they rotated through in small groups;
Language Arts where they completed a planning page for their modern fairy tale, brainstormed alternative words for said to use in their writing, reminders about how to use quotation marks for dialogue, then they started writing their fairy tales; and Math where we played a multiplication team race game. Students could help each other or pass when it was their turn. The winning team was dismissed for lunch first.
After lunch was Library, Silent Reading, time to work on their fairy tales, and Gym. During Gym they played Slimers, which was a hit with everyone.

Our usual testing started again, handwriting, Peter Pan's Shadow, buddies and p.e.
It was M's birthday and E had made marsh mellow treats in. Thanks E. you are wonderful and thoughtful.
Friday began with our usual Friday test. The test included Spelling, Math word problems, a Venn diagram comparing igloos to tipis, telling 5 things that make fairy tales different and answer a Library question about an author (Robert Munsch)
As the students finished the test they worked to complete two pages in their handwriting booklet set up by Mrs. Schneider.
After recess continued reading the novel Peter Pan. I re-read the first chapter and the students had to re-tell the first chapter. Retelling is a great skill and one that the students need to learn. In this chapter there is a combination of action and the introduction concepts. Some students had a hard time wondering how to include the non action plot elements, like the introduction of Neverland, which is mentioned but is not part of the action.
The students then worked on their mini-book based on the book of real facts about the 'Plight of the Polar bear.' It is great to see how the students are dealing with things like global warming and the melting of the Polar ice.
After lunch we opened the bank for the weekly pay day, had show and share, reading or drawing followed by buddies. In buddies the students worked on math and reading with the little buddies.
We followed this with an extra recess which was earned by the students for reaching, as a school, 5000 nights of reading. It was a great sunny day and we enjoyed the break. L said that it was way more fun that a usual recess. Probably because it was extra and maybe because all the teachers were outside with the students. I know I had fun. The extra recess was followed by a short reflection period. We reflected on all the work we have done and have to do by the end of this term. Some are doing well and have most everything done, others have lots of work to do. Next week a list of work completed and incomplete will come home. We ended the day with a rip roaring game of bench ball in gym.

take care and have a great weekend. Mr. W

Look whose picture was in the Times Colonist
Congratulations A. for having your picture chosen by the Times Colonist and published in today's newspaper.
This is fitting because we've just finished our Science unit on Light. In the last week we learned how rainbows are made and how to use ROY G BIV to remember the order of the rainbow's colours. If you want to submit a weather picture, I am still collecting them and sending them to the Times Colonist.
Here is a hint for getting your picture published: Make sure your paper is horizontal (like the one in this picture), use bright colours, outline all pencil lines with marker or pencil crayon, and make a picture that goes with the season we are in right now. Good luck!

Math, Problem solving, polar bear mini books and Gym
We started with Calvin and Hobbes cartoon where Calvin is trying to avoid eating his supper. Very funny and we talked about the different ways that the students try and avoid eating. After that we did Math until recess. Solving word problems. After recess the students were given a fact book on Polar Bears and after going through it for facts, Plot, and setting ideas they worked in pairs to plan and write a story about Polar bears that uses the information in a Mini Book story. They were so well focused and on task that I let the writing continue up until lunch time.
After lunch we had computers where the students learned how to create dialog boxes to go with three pictures they got from the internet. One student had a dragon talking to a bear and a human. Very creative and very useful for future writing projects.
After Computers the students went to Music where they practiced reading music and playing the recorder. We returned to the computer lab after music for 15 minutes to finish up the assignment, before heading off to the gym.
We played a game of bench ball with Mrs. Carlton's class. Great day everyone and tomorrow's test will have spelling, questions on compare and contrast an igloo and a tipi. You have to fill out a venn diagram comparing a tipi to an igloo. They have to list three things that are the same, three things they individually have different. (three ways the tipi is different from the igloo, and three ways the igloo is different from the tipi).
There will be some basic math addition to keep your brain sharp. Take care and see you all tomorrow.
