Day recipe, multiplication involving 10s & 100s, Eric Clapton and Fable Film Formulator machines

H got to help out serving in the Kitchen.  She did a great Job
We began the day with multiplication using 10's.  Starting with 2x10   then 20 x 1, then 10 x 20.  Then 2 x 9, then 2 x 90, then 20 x 90.  The concept goes from the known to the unknown, expanding on the same principle.  The principle is when you multiply by 10 you just forget the 0(s), do the multiplication then add back the 0's.  20 x 4 is thought of as 2 x 4 plus the 0.  8 and add back the 0 = 80.  By the end most of the students in the class managed to do the following questions 2 x 90, 5 x 80, 5x70 and 60 x 50 .  The students said those are too easy.. So I changed 5 x 70 to 50 x 70.  They said that was too easy, all you have to do is multiply 5 x 7 and add two 0's.   So i changed it to 50 x 700. They said that was too easy, all you have to do is multiply 5 x 7 and add three 0's.   So i changed it to 500 x 700. They said that was too easy, all you have to do is multiply 5 x 7 and add 4 0's.   I asked them if there was any number of 0's I could add to make it hard.  They said no.  They learned the rule.....

Great day Recipes

After math they wrote a recipe on the perfect day.  Last week they wrote a recipe for friendship.  I wanted to continue with the learning they got from writing a recipe last week .  They had to remember what to include in a recipe, (ingredients, amounts and cooking procedure) then apply it to what would make the perfect day then finish off by adding a picture.

After Recess the students worked in groups to make a fable for one of the areas in ROCKS (respect, organization, courtesy, kindness, safety).  Mr. Stokes worked with the students to create a new fable to go with a school rule, 'look before you push a door open'.  The students then chose a school rule associated with ROCKS and began to write their own fable.  The fables are going to be drawn out on film stock to be presented as a movie.

After lunch the students not in choir listened to and did a one page report on Eric Clapton who became known as "the guitar god", as he impressed the whole English music scene with his amazing guitar playing.

After Choir the students had more time to make their Fable Film Formulator machines, to present their Fables.  They worked on their Formulator machines and a story board for their Fable movie.  We took a break to do another activity in our 'so you want to be chief challenge.'  Today's challenge was very challenging as it involved candy.  Ask your child about it...  We did get the whole thing on film.  Our reality show will be hilarious when we wrap it all up.

See you all tomorrow and remember think like a chief.... you never know when the contest will be taking place.
